Introduction
National Trade Corridor Improvement Programme (NTCIP) launched in 2006 aims at revamping the transport infrastructure & trade logistics and services and improve regional connectivity (links with China, Afghanistan / CARs, Iran etc.). The framework takes an integrated approach to reduce the cost of doing business in Pakistan and bring the trade and transport logistics chain and services to international standards. With the introduction of reforms supplemented by a strong investment program, NTCIP has evolved a strategic framework to meet the challenges to
- Modernize and streamline trade and transport logistics, practices and customs
- Improve port efficiency, reduce the costs for port users and enhance port management accountability
- Create a commercial and accountable environment in Pakistan Railways and increase private sector participation in operation of rail services
- Modernize the trucking industry and reduce the cost of transport and other externalities
- Sustain delivery of an efficient, safe and reliable National Highways system
- Promote and ensure safe, secure, economical and efficient civil aviation operations
- Enhance export of perishable commodities (fruits, vegetables, livestock etc.) through establishment of an efficient and viable cool chain supply system
- Develop along NTC, the energy corridor linking China and Afghanistan / CARs and
- Develop Inland Water Transport through link canals and Indus River as alternative and economical mode of transportation..
To implement the framework, the GoP has set up a National Trade Corridor Task Force (NTC Task Force) headed by Deputy Chairman, Planning Commission with Federal Secretaries of Ministries (Communications, Railways, Ports and Shipping, Defence, Petroleum and Industries) and Chairman,FBR as its members. The Chairman, NTC Task Force constituted ten committees for implementation of the NTCIP Programme.
